Wine writer Charles Metcalfe receives the Portuguese Comendador do Ordem do Mérito Empresarial

Good to see Charles Metcalfe receive the Comendador do Ordem do Mérito Empresarial (Classe do Mérito Agrícola) from the Portuguese Government for his sterling work communicating about Portuguese wines.

Pictured (right), Charles was presented with his medal of merit by the Portuguese Ambassador in London, Dr João da Vallera on Wednesday.

Metcalfe paid tribute to his wife, food writer Kathryn McWhirter who co-authored their book, The Wine & Food Lover’s Guide to Portugal. You can buy it on his website here. And while you’re there, make sure you check out his review of a very special tasting of Ports back to 1815(click here) hosted by Port shipper Ferreira to celebrate what would have been the 200th birthday of Dona Antónia Adelaide Ferreira. Teed me up nicely for a visit to the shipper’s Douro Superior estate, Quinta da Leda, next week, though I suspect we’ll be focusing on rather younger wines!
