Portuguese Wine School at Taberna do Mercado with The Wine Detective

I am thrilled to bits to be hosting Portuguese Wine School at Taberna do Mercado, starting next month.  I first met Chef/patron Nuno Mendes at his Michelin-starred venture Viajante in 2013 (my post here), when he expressed a desire to set up “a very casual, fun, modern but rustic” Portuguese restaurant in London.  Taberna do Mercado is it. 

The wine list is 100% Portuguese, largely artisanal and the menu champions Portuguese ingredients with, of course, Mendes’ magic touch – rustic yet refined, sometimes tongue in cheek, like house-canned fish – scallops, mussels.

During Portuguese Wine School at Taberno de Mercado, I’ll be presenting monthly classes with 8-10 benchmark and out of the box wines, plus a few ‘extra-curricular’ bonuses along the way to enjoy over supper afterwards with you.  So there will be plenty of opportunity to ask me and team Taberna about Portugal in an informative but fun environment.

We kick off at 6.30pm on 5th December, when the first class will focus on Portugal’s world class fortified wines (Madeira, Port, Moscatel de Setúbal).  A true strength (in every sense of the word!)  Not to mention so very timely to nail the festive feast shopping list, a present or two.

After an ease-you-in Port Tonic (Niepoort White Rabbit Dry White Port), I’ll be showing HM Borges Sercial 10 Year Old Madeira, Barbeito Malvasia Single Cask 416 c+e Madeira 2002, SIVIPA Moscatel de Setubal 10 Year Old, Niepoort Colheita Tawny Port 2005, Niepoort Ruby Junior Port, Graham’s Special River Quintas Edition “Six Grapes” Reserve Ruby Port, Sandeman (Unfiltered) LBV 2011, Warre’s Quinta da Cavadinha Single Quinta Vintage Port 2002, Ramos Pinto Vintage Port 2000.

After the Christmas break, monthly classes resume with:

  4. Bairrada – April
  5. Vinho Verde – May
  6. Wild cards – June
