Heads up on a specialist in half bottles of wine

Half bottles of wine are a rarity on wine lists, let alone shop shelves so those in search of modest portions take note.  New online retailer Halfwine  specialises exclusively in half bottles.

The single bottle choice currently runs to around 30 wines, a mix of old world and new, from established producers.  Owner Kevin Dilton-Hill tells me “I aim to stock one, maybe two in each style/category.  For example 2 Chablis or 2 NZ Sauvignon Blancs.” 

He says “The wines will change about every quarter. My key proposition is that I am acting as my customers’ sommelier.  If they like old world cabs, then I will have a good one from a good vintage that is typical of a wine from the region, say, a Saint Estephe.  Similarly if you want a new world Pinot I will have a good one, currently a Craggy Range from Central Otago.  And I guarantee my choice….”
