Through a glass clearly – a comparative tasting with Georg J. Riedel

In 2005, my first glassware tasting proved salutary – as you’ll see from my report here, I am a reformed sceptic on the benefits of tailor-made wine glasses, so I thought you might be interested to know about a forthcoming event at Vinopolis (press release below). Georg Riedel (pictured) is a great showman, so it’s your chance to decide if it’s all a bit Derren Brown or, alternatively, the science and psychology of glassware (factors like flow initiation, gustatory and olfactory receptors and the like) convinces you too.

“June 2010 will see a very special Riedel wine and glass comparative tasting take place, conducted by Georg Riedel, 10th generation master-glassmaker and head of Riedel – the wine glass company.

In a unique and fascinating wine and glass tasting, Georg Riedel will demonstrate the relationship between the shape of a glass and our perception and enjoyment of wines.

This tasting will also see the launch of the limited edition Georg Riedel Signature Amadeo Decanter. Each decanter is individually hand-made by Riedel’s most senior master-craftsmen and carries the personal signature of Georg Riedel engraved on the base. This item cannot be bought in retail stores and is exclusively available to those attending tastings with Georg Riedel.

The evening takes place at Vinopolis, London’s premier wine venue, on Thursday 10th June. Entry is from 6.00pm (when a bar will be available) and the tasting will commence promptly at 7.00pm.

Tickets are priced at £60.00 per person and include the cost of the tasting, plus each guest will receive a set of four Vinum XL glasses, worth £100.00. A special discounted ticket for 6 people is also available at £300.00 (to include glasses worth £600.00).
