January Wines of the Month: Vincent Girardin Le Limozin Meursault 2010 & Domaine Sylvain Bzikot Puligny Montrachet 2010

pulignyThis next fortnight sees a rash of tastings showcasing the 2011 Burgundy vintage.  I suspect I’m not alone when I say Burgundy (especially Puligny Montrachet) would be on my desert island wine short-list.  Over the holidays, I enjoyed two extremely well-priced examples which are showing well now – no need to cellar them or pay through the nose.  Here they are, complete with delectable food matches:

Vincent Girardin Le Limozin Meursault 2010

I bought this on deal before Christmas for £23.99, which made this tightly focused, richly (but not over) wooded, intense Chardonnay a real steal (and see the Ocado offer below).  Gunflint and its racy, lemony kick made it the perfect match for wild sea bass with a lemon, caper and parsley butter sauce, the recipe for which came courtesy of De Bortoli’s Steve Webber – thanks Steve!   £29.99 at Waitrose and £28.99 at Ocado or £22.99 at Ocado if you can take advantage of this voucher.

Domaine Sylvain Bzikot Puligny Montrachet 2010

They say taste with your eyes, but I’d happily linger over the gloriously expressive nose of this wine – almost on par with white truffle.  Made by a producer I’d not encountered before, it’s sold by the glass at Alyn Williams and proved the perfect companion for my Christmas Eve starter of smoked egg,crème fraiche, celeriac, truffle soldiers. Ripe, preserved lemons mingled with savoury lees and white truffle, sensually flesh out a fine, long and lemony spine of acidity with a mineral undertow. £30.99 (mixed six price, £28.99) at Noble Green Wines.
