It’s been quite a week for tasting rare, old Portuguese wines. I’ve been privileged to have enjoyed some terrific wines with Baga Friends. And how lucky was I that my visit coincided with Dirk Niepoort’s birthday. He very generously shared some birthday treats with us. Here’s a photographic record of highlights.
Luis Pato’s first Baga
Unbelievable colour & this 33 year old wine kept building in the glass
Goncalves Faria Baga 1990; I also tasted the 88 & 75 – wonderful wines.
Bussaco Tinto 1949 – the oldest red of the flight
And the oldest white – the still impressive 1955
Birthday celebrations – why does no-one else make a garrafeira (demi-john aged Vintage Port -soooo elegant
Phenomenal sweet fruit still – another wine which built in the glass
And who is the rarest of all? Jose Maria de Fonseca Moscatel Torna Viagem – a Moscatel which crossed the equator twice by ship en route to the tropics & back. Amazing balance; great complexity
