Barros Special Edition 100th Anniversary Very Old Tawny Port

Very Old Tawny Ports are a growing category, albeit by their very nature niche.  Barros recently joined the frey with a limited production Very Old Tawny Port of 1913 numbered bottles.

To commemorate the Port House’s centenary, winemaker Pedro Sá has produced a blend from the best wines from each decade since Barros was founded. The average age of the wines is 65 years.

It’s also unusual in that, apparently, it’s a single vineyard wine.  The grapes come from Quinta de S. Luiz, whose vines range between 20 and 80 years old and which is located between 200 and 400 metres above sea level.

All the wines in the blend were aged in small 225 litre oak casks in the Barros warehouse in Vila Nova de Gaia.

Silky in the mouth, fresh and fruity with honeyed dried apricots, citrus, sweet barley sugar and vanillin/cafe crème notes, this is undoubtedly an attractive wine. Persistent and really very drinkable.  In fact almost too easy-going for its own good where, for me, it lacks the resonance of history – the patina of age – which has captured my imagination and ensnared my taste buds when tasting other very old tawnies (understandably so in the case of 19th century single vintage Ports Taylor’s Scion, Wine & Soul 5G and Quinta do Vallado Adelaide Tributa Vallado, but also Niepoort VV which, like the Barros, is a blend of years).  Set against this one has to take into account that, at its recommended retail price 260€, the Barros costs but a small fraction of the price of these wines. In the UK it is sold by Fine & Rare Wines at £100 ex duty & VAT.  Alcohol 20%, pH 3,56, Total Acidity 5,8 dm3, Reducing Sugars – 134dm3.
