Turning Portuguese: wine tastings at Taberna do Mercado, Humble Grape & Sixtyone
I’m very much looking forward to presenting two Alentejo masterclasses today at Nuno Mendes’ recently launched Taberna do Mercado in Spitalfields market. It has received ecstatic reviews, so I’m not the only one thrilled that the acclaimed chef has so brilliantly realised the desire he expressed to me a couple of year’s ago to open “a very casual, fun, modern but rustic” Portuguese restaurant in London (my interview with Mendes here).
Even better, it would seem Portugal is officially hip in London! While The Telegraph recently queried “is Portuguese food the next big trend,” Harpers Wine & Spirit’s recent poll of the UK wine trade revealed that Portugal is the most under-rated wine country.
Ready to explore? Though today’s tastings are for a trade audience, Taberna do Mercado has an excellent all Portuguese wine list so it’s the perfect environment into which to discover Portuguese wine and food culture. Or, if you’d like to attend a tutored tasting of Portuguese wines by yours truly, why not join me on 30 July for a Portuguese Mega Tasting at Humble Grape. We’ll taste a dozen wines in the private dining at Humble Grape’s about to be launched first Wine Bar & Shop at 2 Battersea Rise.
And the summer of Portugal continues at next month’s Sip & Savour lunch at Sixtyone Restaurant, with head-to-heads featuring northern neighbours Vinho Verde and the Douro.
