Alvarinho: Gomariz does strike Gold & Tapada dos Monges 2009

I stand corrected, Quinta de Gomariz Alvarimho 2009 did strike gold, nothwithstanding my earlier blog here announcing the results of the Best of Vinho Verde Awards 2010.  It didn’t catch my eye in the awards because the result appears under Vinho Regional Minho not Vinho Verde (the grapes are not from the sub-region of Moncao).  Embarrassing and reassuring both!

Tapada dos Mongos Red 2009 Vinho Verde, made by Vinhos Norte, one of the region’s big players, also picked up a gold medal and, inspired by this news, last week I tasted Tapada dos Mongos Alvarinho 2009.  Perfumed with pear and lychee notes, it shows bright, well-defined, juicy pineapple (a little sour in a good way) and apricot to nose and palate.  A good, well balanced aromatic/fruit focused style of Alvarinho at 12.5% abv.  I’ll soon be writing up other wines from this range, though not the red.
