First taste: Sao Miguel Art. Terra Organic Tinto 2014
The focus at Herdade de São Miguel, a family-owned but sizeable estate, is on delivering great value. But it’s not the only way they seek to please. The team, ably lead by Alexandre Relvas Jr, are a dynamic bunch with an ever expanding range. This engaging new-to-the-range red shows they have their finger firmly on the pulse. It’s not only organic, but also un-oaked. Which is not to say it’s at all ‘hair shirt’ – far from it!
São Miguel Art. Terra Organic Tinto 2014 (VR Alentejano)
This hand harvested Syrah/Touriga Nacional blend comes from a small certified organic plot on the estate’s schist vineyard. I’m a big fan of the smoky charcuterie characters to which Syrah is susceptible when treated reductively (this wine was aged in vat ”sur lie” for 6 months). Though it was de-stemmed, subtle green notes (bay leaf?) to nose and palate combined with its meatiness bring delicious depth and interest to its sweet but lively, al dente raspberry and juicy black berry fruit. Ripe but plucky tannins pulled at my heart-strings too. Thoroughly lovely with a lick of Touriga dark chocolate on day two. But for being in tasting mode, it would have been long gone on day one! If you like Syrah-focused Rhône reds (Crozes-Hermitage, Vacqueyras et al), why not try this. A great addition to a slowly but surely growing range of organic Portuguese wine and interesting unoaked reds. 14%
