August Wines of the Month: off piste
I took an early holiday this summer spending a couple of weeks in Italy, before catching the ferry to Croatia for a spot of sea kayaking in the glorious Adriatic (source of the best squid ever). For this reason, I have no detailed notes on my August Wines of the Month, not even specific wines to recommend – this was no busman’s holiday!
Rather, I just wanted to highlight a couple of great finds – real Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi Classico Superiore from Le Marche, Italy and Croatia’s Pošip grape, which is primarily grown in the Dalmatian region of Croatia on the island of Korkula.
Our terrific hosts, Ashley and Jason Bartner of La Tavola Marche, bottle the Verdicchio themselves and, delightfully different from the ubiquitous mass produced industrial versions it was – leesily textured with lovely line.
In Croatia, I enjoyed a mini-horizontal of Korkula Pošips at D’vino Wine Bar in the old town of Dubrovnik which put me in mind of Pfalz Riesling, with peach, citrus and hay notes, minerality too.
Can anyone recommend any great examples available in the UK?
