Julia Harding MW goes native! Revealed: 50 Great Portuguese Wines 2012

Today we found out which wines Julia Harding MW selected for the 2012 50 Great Portuguese Wines. And sure enough Harding, who is co-author of the soon to be released Wine Grapes with Jancis Robinson MW and Jose Vouillamoz, has focused exclusively on Portugal’s treasure trove of native grape varieties – fantastic!

There are more white wines than ever before and, for the first time, a sparkling wine plucked from the cellars of Quinta das Bageiras (pictured) makes the cut.

As always with 50 Great there are new discoveries to be made, for me – Jampal, Alvarelhão, Pérola – and I’m looking forward to getting to grips with her selection later today [click here for my subsequent notes on my picks of the bunch]. Here it is (grape varieties in italics):

Hi Hugo, thanks for your comment. Actually for previous 50 Greats Tom Cannavan selected Pera Manca in 2011 and I selected Pera Manca white in 2010; Jamie Goode selected Barca Velha 2000 in 2009. The latter is only released every few years and not so easy to taste – I’ve not yet tasted the recently released 2004, so that’s another issue certainly with Barca Velha, but at the end of the day, it’s a personal choice. Hi Sarah,

thank you for your prompt reply!

One other question: what is your opinion about the Madeira Wines?

They have been a late discovery but I truly find them one of the most exciting produce from Portugal.

Gefunden habe ich ihre Liste bei einer anderen Weinbloggerin aus Großbritanien, Sarah Ahmed, the Wine Detective. […]
