Deal watch: iconic Chardonnay deal at Waitrose
This year I tasted Eileen Hardy Chardonnay over its entire 30 year life span. A memorable tasting. And not just for me judging by the buzz around this unrepeatable, rare tasting opportunity with members of the Hardy family and the winemaker.
The vertical confirmed what great value this impressively ageworthy Chardonnay remains. I reckon the price has been set in aspic for some time!?! So it would be super remiss of me not to draw to your attention that Waitrose’s current 25% off fine wines deal extends to Eileen Hardy Chardonnay 2014. Suffice to say I bagged six bottles pronto (the deal ends 20 December, subject to stock of course).
You’ll find my tasting note on the 2014 vintage from the vertical below and my report on each and every vintage – from 1986-2014 here, together with some background on the history and evolution of this Australian icon.
It would do great justice to your Christmas lunch or very happily bide its time for a good few years yet should you choose to cellar it (as I most probably will).
Hardys Eileen Hardy Chardonnay 2014 (Tasmania/Yarra Valley/Margaret River)
A blend of 63% Tasmania/34% Yarra Valley/3% Margaret River Chardonnay which puts the fruit to the fore with powerful, ripe white peach and ample mouthfeel to boot – more pillowy lees than savoury lanolin/bacon fat. Persistent acidity makes for good length, teasing out the fruit so, though powerful and expressive, this is an elegant wine. Lithe, with lovely fruit intensity. 14% £19.49 reduced from £25.99 at Waitrose.
By the way, also on deal & terrific value is Sandeman LBV Port 2011 – from this vintage and this house, which makes an (ageworthy) unfiltered style, it is an absolute steal on the same 25% off deal at Waitrose at £10.99. My notes here.
